“Word Walls-- Used for more than Wall Decor"
Vocabulary development is vital to academic success. Students all enter our classrooms with a certain number of words they are exposed to. Some come with more than others. It is our job to continue building their vocabulary banks by immersing them in new words through our lessons, engaging activities, and visuals.
Word walls are used as a visual classroom reference for students to anchor their understanding and familiarity with the words that are being studied in the current unit or topic. Students should refer to these words during class discussion and use these words to build background knowledge of the content they are learning. Word walls with pictures are essential for ESL, ELL, and ESS students. Remember, a picture is worth a thousand words.
Why are WORD WALLS more than just WALL CANDY in secondary classrooms? They can be used to…
- As part of a lesson through a Gallery Walk.
- To help students answer questions, by having them use the word wall as an answer bank.
- To practice sorting and categorizing words.
- To complete a notebook word list.
- To review or reference during an end of the unit review game.
All learners want to be successful ands some kids come with all the answers and some kids need a hint or two. Use your class décor to assist and reinforce what students should put into their long-term memory.
