“Word Walls-- Used for more than Wall Decor"
Vocabulary development is vital to academic success.  Students all enter our classrooms with a certain number of words they are exposed to.  Some come with more than others.  It is our job to continue building their vocabulary banks by immersing them in new words through our lessons, engaging activities, and visuals.

Word walls are used as a visual classroom reference for students to anchor their understanding and familiarity with the words that are being studied in the current unit or topic.  Students should refer to these words during class discussion and use these words to build background knowledge of the content they are learning.  Word walls with pictures are essential for ESL, ELL, and ESS students.  Remember, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Mardi Gras Activities BUNDLE, Digital Graphic Organizers, Google Link Activities

Mardi Gras is a festive celebration that originates from Christian traditions and is particularly associated with the period leading up to Lent, a time of fasting and reflection before Easter in many Christian denominations. The term "Mardi Gras" translates from French to "Fat Tuesday", referring to the practice of indulging in rich, fatty foods before the fasting season begins.

Key Features of Mardi Gras:

  1. Timing:

    • Mardi Gras takes place on the day before Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent.
    • The date of Mardi Gras changes each year, as it is tied to the lunar calendar and Easter Sunday.
  2. Cultural Significance:

    • While it has religious roots, Mardi Gras has evolved into a broader cultural celebration of music, parades, costumes, and feasting.
    • It is most famously associated with New Orleans, Louisiana, but it is celebrated in various forms around the world, especially in countries with strong Catholic traditions.
  3. Traditions:

    • Parades and Floats: Elaborate parades with decorated floats are central to Mardi Gras, particularly in New Orleans.
    • Costumes and Masks: Participants often wear colorful costumes and masks, adding to the festive atmosphere.
    • Beads and Throws: Parade participants toss trinkets like beads, coins, and toys to the crowd.
    • King Cake: A traditional dessert with a small figurine (often a baby) hidden inside. The person who finds the figurine is expected to host the next party.
    • Purple, Green, and Gold: These are the official colors of Mardi Gras, symbolizing justice, faith, and power, respectively.
  4. Global Variations:

    • Carnival: Many countries, especially in Europe and South America, celebrate Carnival, a similar pre-Lenten festival. Brazil’s Carnival, for instance, is world-renowned for its samba parades and costumes.
    • Shrove Tuesday: In England and other countries, this day is observed with the tradition of eating pancakes.

Mardi Gras is a joyful celebration of community, culture, and tradition that blends religious and secular practices, making it one of the most iconic festivals in the world.
