Digital Escape Rooms for World History Classrooms

What are Digital Escape Rooms?

Digital Escape Rooms are activities that students complete in order to get a code to move from Room (Activity) to Room (Activity).  Each code is inputted into a Google Form which will lead them to a link to the next room.  Once students have progressed through the Breakout Rooms, they will be able to ESCAPE.

Key Terms for Digital Breakout Rooms:

Google Form: A link to a document that allows students to input codes move through the Digital Escape Room.  This allows the activity to be student led and the teacher does not have the check codes, but can just facilitate assisting students with the activities in the Breakout Rooms.
Breakout Room: Activity that must be completed to get access to a SECRET CODE.
Code: A SECRET sequence of letters or numbers that must be inputted into the Google Form to gain access to the next Breakout Room or the final Breakout Room.

Why should I use a Digital Escape Room over a paper escape room?

Well, if you are looking for an activity that requires ZERO center prep, ZERO copying, and ZERO color-coding, then Digital Escape Rooms are for you.  However, sometimes the personality of your class dictates which type of escape room is best.  In my experience, even if you are not comfortable and it is out of your realm of knowledge, the kids LOVE them and they are pretty savvy about figuring out how to navigate the system.

How do I ensure a smooth Digital Escape Room experience?

A few tips to make sure your Digital Escape Room lesson runs smoothly:
  • Make sure you read the teacher instructions thoroughly.
  • Make sure you click on each link and understand how each activity works.
  • Make sure you have clicked on the Google Form and you know how to share the link and have students use the link.
  • When you assign the activity to students, open each activity and explain what is expected in order for them to get the needed CODE.
  • You might even want to try and Escape yourself.

I just finished my first Constitution Digital Escape Room.  I am so excited about it.  It covers several key topics and will make learning about the structure and background of the constitution fun!

    Why Use Agendas?

Agendas set the pace and expectations of the lesson.  They keep time managed, keep student on task, organized, and focused.  They are the road map to your lesson's destination.

How do agendas keeps students on task and organized?

    1. Keeps a list ready to reference and set the tone of the lesson.
    2. Provide a road map to the daily objectives.
    3. Ensure everyone knows what is expected, when it is expected, and how they are going to meet the expectation.

How do I use these agendas for more than just a overview at the beginning of the lesson?

    • Have students save a copy and check off what they have completed.
    • Have students reflect and review the agenda at the end of the lesson and explain the objective as a ticket out.
    • Have students create a visual timeline of events.
    • Excellent for students who are absent or virtual for a daily lesson.

Timelines and Sequencing for Secondary Students

Timelines, Sequencing, Google Classroom, Learned Lessons

      What are Sequencing Activities?

Sequencing activities require students to organize information learning into a time sequence and analyze patterns of historical events.  If students can master the art of sequencing they can better understand cause and effect patterns and relationships between events.

Why should I plan for students to complete activities that have them sequence events?

      1. Standards-Based Teaching: Sequencing is a Power Standard that crosses all grade levels and content areas.
      2. Bloom's Taxonomy Level:  Builds knowledge by sequencing and then going into the category of analysis by explaining a key event from the timeline.
      3. DOK Level: Collect and Display events in sequential order falls under DOK Level 2, and Investigating an events falls under DOK Level 3.

How do I have the students to go to a deeper level of understanding after sequencing activities?

      • Have students analyze the cause and effects of several events they just sequenced.
      • Have students create a visual timeline of events.
      • Have students research key events from the timeline and write essays on the historical significance then and now.

Elements included in my sequencing lessons:

        • Print and digital option (Google Classroom and Microsoft Compatible)
        • Timeline Cards with images to put in order
        • Timeline Template Sheets
