By the time a class reaches the Cold War, the Progressive Era can feel like a long time ago. Review has to keep coming back around, and it sticks better when students are doing something with their hands.
These picture puzzles cover modern American history from the Industrial Age to President Obama, in print and Google versions. I use them for unit review and test prep with middle and high school students.
How it works
This Picture Puzzle Unit Review is a new and engaging way to create a quick reference study guide, conduct test prep, or just give students an opportunity to review key concepts throughout a unit in an engaging manner. Students will answer questions pertaining to the unit using answers printed on the back of easy to cut out square puzzle pieces. These answers will be placed on their unit review page and then the puzzle pieces will be placed on corresponding grid to revel a picture pertaining to the unit. Students will then use the review answers, the picture revealed, and their knowledge to complete a writing prompt.
Why use review lessons with high school students? Reinforcement of Previous Learning: Review lessons help students reinforce and consolidate their understanding of previously covered topics. High school curricula are typically fast-paced, and students may encounter a large amount of information within a short period. Regular review sessions allow them to revisit and solidify their knowledge, ensuring they retain key concepts and skills.- Identification of Knowledge Gaps: Review lessons can help identify any knowledge gaps or misconceptions that students may have developed. By revisiting earlier material, students have the opportunity to recognize areas where they may be struggling or lacking a clear understanding. This identification enables teachers to address these gaps and provide targeted support to ensure comprehensive comprehension.
- Preparation for Assessments: Review lessons are particularly useful before assessments, such as exams or standardized tests. They help students refresh their memory, recall important information, and practice applying their knowledge. A tip from my classroom
Hold on to the puzzle from an earlier unit and bring it back as a warm-up a few weeks later. Students are surprised how much they remember once the picture starts to show, and you'll see quickly which terms didn't stick. Those are the ones I'd put on the next bell ringer.
