4 review-day ideas before winter break: escape rooms, games and more

The stretch between Thanksgiving and winter break is tough. Students are restless, testing is coming, and the last thing anyone wants is another worksheet. Review days don't have to be a fight, though. These are the ones that worked best in the classrooms I've been in.

1. Run an escape room.

Students work in teams to solve clues tied to your unit, and they have to know the content to unlock the next step. The competition does the motivating for you. Digital versions work great on Chromebooks, and you can run them without prep.

2. Gallery walk with a twist.

Post five or six key questions or images around the room. Groups rotate every four minutes and add one new fact to each poster. The last group has to summarize the whole poster for the class.

3. Quiz-show warm-ups.

Turn your bell ringers into a running team score for the week. Same questions you'd ask anyway, but now there's a winner on Friday.

4. Let students build the study guide.

Give each group one section of the unit and have them write the review page for it. Copy the pages together and the class has a study guide they actually read.

If you'd like review days that are already built, my escape rooms cover history, geography, civics, and science, in print and digital.

Happy Planning,
Learned Lessons

  • Collaboration and teamwork: Escape rooms encourage students to work together as a team to solve problems and complete tasks. This collaborative environment fosters communication, cooperation, and leadership skills that are valuable both in and out of the classroom.
  • Cross-curricular connections: Digital escape rooms can be adapted to various subjects and topics, such as math, science, history, and language arts. This versatility allows educators to create customized escape room experiences that align with their curriculum and learning objectives.
  • Differentiated learning: Escape rooms can cater to different learning styles and abilities by offering a mix of challenges and puzzles. This encourages students to utilize their individual strengths and learn from one another.
  • Technology integration: Digital escape rooms require students to interact with technology, which helps develop their digital literacy skills. This can be particularly useful in a world where technology is increasingly integrated into various aspects of life.
  • Assessment and feedback: Escape rooms can provide educators with valuable insights into their students' problem-solving, critical thinking, and teamwork abilities. This information can be used to assess progress and provide targeted feedback to improve learning outcomes.

World History Escape Rooms: digital review students love
Digital escape room instructions for middle and high school classrooms

Digital Escape Rooms for World History Classrooms

What are Digital Escape Rooms?

Digital Escape Rooms are activities that students complete in order to get a code to move from Room (Activity) to Room (Activity).  Each code is inputted into a Google Form which will lead them to a link to the next room.  Once students have progressed through the Breakout Rooms, they will be able to ESCAPE.

Key Terms for Digital Breakout Rooms:

Google Form: A link to a document that allows students to input codes move through the Digital Escape Room.  This allows the activity to be student led and the teacher does not have the check codes, but can just facilitate assisting students with the activities in the Breakout Rooms.
Breakout Room: Activity that must be completed to get access to a SECRET CODE.
Code: A SECRET sequence of letters or numbers that must be inputted into the Google Form to gain access to the next Breakout Room or the final Breakout Room.

Why should I use a Digital Escape Room over a paper escape room?

Well, if you are looking for an activity that requires ZERO center prep, ZERO copying, and ZERO color-coding, then Digital Escape Rooms are for you.  However, sometimes the personality of your class dictates which type of escape room is best.  In my experience, even if you are not comfortable and it is out of your realm of knowledge, the kids LOVE them and they are pretty savvy about figuring out how to navigate the system.

How do I ensure a smooth Digital Escape Room experience?

A few tips to make sure your Digital Escape Room lesson runs smoothly:
  • Make sure you read the teacher instructions thoroughly.
  • Make sure you click on each link and understand how each activity works.
  • Make sure you have clicked on the Google Form and you know how to share the link and have students use the link.
  • When you assign the activity to students, open each activity and explain what is expected in order for them to get the needed CODE.
  • You might even want to try and Escape yourself.

I just finished my first Constitution Digital Escape Room.  I am so excited about it.  It covers several key topics and will make learning about the structure and background of the constitution fun!
  • Found Fathers
  • Structure of Constitution and Mini Quiz
  • Constitutional Principles and Constitutional Parts
  • Preamble Meaning
  • Constitution Vocabulary Puzzle
  • Teacher Instructions for ways to use this resource.
