4 Review-Day Ideas for the Weeks Before Winter Break

4 review-day ideas before winter break: escape rooms, games and more

The stretch between Thanksgiving and winter break is tough. Students are restless, testing is coming, and the last thing anyone wants is another worksheet. Review days don't have to be a fight, though. These are the ones that worked best in the classrooms I've been in.

1. Run an escape room.

Students work in teams to solve clues tied to your unit, and they have to know the content to unlock the next step. The competition does the motivating for you. Digital versions work great on Chromebooks, and you can run them without prep.

2. Gallery walk with a twist.

Post five or six key questions or images around the room. Groups rotate every four minutes and add one new fact to each poster. The last group has to summarize the whole poster for the class.

3. Quiz-show warm-ups.

Turn your bell ringers into a running team score for the week. Same questions you'd ask anyway, but now there's a winner on Friday.

4. Let students build the study guide.

Give each group one section of the unit and have them write the review page for it. Copy the pages together and the class has a study guide they actually read.

If you'd like review days that are already built, my escape rooms cover history, geography, civics, and science, in print and digital.

Happy Planning,
