Outline Notes for Review: Just the essentials for test prep

Outline notes give students just the essentials of a unit on a few pages. They are what I reach for when a class needs a fast review, a student is coming back from an absence, or test day is closer than I would like.

Here are all of my outline notes sets, sorted by subject.

Outline notes by subject

How I use them

Before a unit test, I give students the outline and a highlighter. They mark what they already know in one color and what they need to study in another. Then they spend their study time on the second color.

They are also my go-to for students who missed several days. Instead of copying a stack of notes, they read the outline and come to me with questions.

A tip from my classroom

Cut an outline into sections and give one section to each group. Each group teaches its part to the class in three minutes. Students remember what they had to teach far longer than what they only read.

Geography Bullet Notes: for secondary students

Some students don't need another full set of notes. They need the essentials in one place before a test. These outline notes boil each world region down to the essential content, with the key people and places to know and four graphic organizers per unit. I use them as a study guide, for state test review and as a quick reference students can keep in their notebooks.

Why Use Bullet Note with Secondary Students?
    • Encourages organization: Bullet notes encourage students to organize their thoughts and ideas in a structured and logical manner. This can help them to better understand and retain information.
    • Increases retention: When students take bullet notes, they are actively engaging with the material and summarizing it in their own words. This can help them to better understand and remember what they have learned.
    • Facilitates review: Bullet notes make it easy for students to review the material later on. They can quickly scan the notes to refresh their memory or to prepare for a test.
    • Supports active learning: By taking bullet notes, students are actively engaging with the material, rather than passively listening to a lecture or reading a textbook.
    • Develops critical thinking skills: Bullet notes require students to identify the most important information and to organize it in a way that makes sense to them. This helps them to develop their critical thinking skills and to become more effective learners.
Overall, bullet notes can be a valuable tool for secondary students to help them better understand, retain, and apply the information they are learning.

Life Science Outline Notes: just the essentials

Some students don't need another full set of notes. They need the key ideas on one page so they can review before a test. That's why I made these short outlines for every Life Science unit, from cells and heredity to ecology and body systems.

I used them for unit review, test prep and summer school, and students glued them into their notebooks as quick reference sheets. Each one has a print copy and a Google version.

    How I'd use this

Hand out the outline at the start of a unit, not just at the end. Students highlight each idea the first time it comes up in class. By test day, anything still unhighlighted is what they need to go back and study.
